Back to Civilization

Getting home after being on tour is always a strange feeling as you have months building up to it and then the excitement of going away and then you get home and everything is always more boring than before and plus for some reason when ever I have been on tour I always get ill when I come home and this time wasn't any different but feel better now so everything is good.

So for the last few weeks my life has been took up by a certain band called Doll and the Kicks and a certain city called Vienna, its something that I'm really excited about doing as I fell in love with the city when I went over earlier in the year and to be able to put a night on over there will be great. The plan is to make it like my night is the UK where there not really your regular gig, there still organized like one but have more of a party feel, there are going to be 3 bands supporting which I don't think happens very often in Vienna so hope everyone will come along and enjoy there-self, Its going to be in March next year when there on the European leg of there tour so there is still plenty of time to do all the promotion, also a good friend of mine who is helping me out there has offered me a DJ Set so that will be great to do a few days before.

Next month is going to be the return of my Asylum Sessions in my home town of Swindon which is great to do as there is always lots of friendly faces, haven't done one for a few months as ive been busy, then went on tour, but on Dec 10th its my Xmas special and have a band from London who I really like called Bleech playing and some amazing support, there is going to be 4 support bands so its going to be a really busy night, its going to be really tough to choose the running order as I love each band for a different reason and they all mean quite alot to me, may even let the crowd decide....

Ive been also lucky enough to confirm Doll and the Kicks to play for me in Swindon (as well as Vienna), it going to be the first gig of there European tour, its on the 29th Jan and I'm really looking forward to it as there a band that I have been a fan of for a while and have mentioned them on here a few months ago, but promotion for that will really kick in after the 10th, but tickets are on sale already and for a fiver you cant go wrong, plus I've got some very special friends coming down from London.....

What else have I been doing ummmm trying to get some press for my nights and myself as I really need to start to push things forward and I feel there is alot more potential in the situations I create and also the ones I find myself in, I did a podcast the other day just having a chat about my nights which I will post when I get it back, I also did an interview in Glasgow which was great I will post the final version when I get it back as think there is going to be some music added to it and so on.

But next year is already looking really exciting, Adam has a Paris date in Jan so going to go out for that and Im also trying to co arrange with another promoter for a night in Paris in Feb so that will be great if we can put something together. There is also something very very exciting happening in the Summer but cant speak about that at the moment.

Anyway I leave you with a video of Doll and the Kicks

Roses Kings Castles Tour Part II

Ok so left the hotel had missed breakfast due to writing the last blog but nevermind, had to wait a bit for the bus to pick me up, my own fault because I went to a different hotel in the middle of no where.
We had also gained a new member of the band called Ross who comes from Glasgow, he was a really nice bloke and glad to have met him. He had what some would say as the most important role in the tour, even more so than maybe Adam's and that was to be on "Og Watch" which is no easy task.
So got on the bus and on we went to Edinburgh which is a really beautiful place, its amazing how it is built on all the different levels, we was playing at the Cabaret Voltaire which I still cant say, we met the promoter called Dan (who did a great job) and then unloaded the equipment and did a soundcheck, while they was doing that I took the bus back to the hotel and Og roamed the streets with a bottle of Jack.

So met up with them all for a meal a few hours later and everyone was in good form, Og was singing and dancing round the poles in the restaurant, the band then went over and Me, Og, Adam and Ross stayed for pudding which had plastic in it so we all got extra free..... Now this is where the night begins, I gave everyone a wrist band to get in to the venue, Og decided he was going to be kind to some lads he insulted a few minutes before by giving them his wrist band, when we go to get in Og wasnt allowed which was a simple situation to solve until Og tryed to shake the bouncers hand and he wouldn't, so Og called him a dickhead and then it all kicked off, so after a shouting match Og was in and everything was ok, went to the dressing room everything was good and we had a good laugh while Ross was getting an "African Kiss".

Me and Og went down and watched a support band called The Ok Social Club which were great, think they was the best of the tour, after Og got on stage to introduce Roses Kings Castles but maybe the words "Now listen up you little Scottish pricks" didn't help but it got there attention of the crowd and also the bouncers.....
So Og was pulled of stage and given a final warning, Roses came on and sounded really good there is a video below, Og had made friends with a few people by this point and was dancing away with them, the floor was quite slippery and Og and this bloke feel over and landed on top of each other, the bouncers came running over grabbed Og and dragged him out.
I carried on watching the gig until Ok Social Manger came running over to me and said you need to go outside straight away Tayo is about to be arrested so off me and Ross go (a bit like Batman and Robin from the Only Fools and Horses episode)

Now Im not to sure of how much I can put about what happened next but Im guessing if you was outside at the same time as us you would know so lets pretend you are... Og and the bouncer was arguing and another was trying to calm it down and Og said they was beeing racist, then a riot van turns up and starts asking us questions, Og had been drinking for days by now but he can come across as being so sober it was amazing to watch but then he came out with a brilliant line, one of the Police officers was black, so Og goes "I think it is because I am black" the officer goes "I am black too tho Sir" "Yeah but I iz blacker than you" Dont think there was an answer in the Officers handbook to deal with that point, butt all you could do is laugh. So after a quick chat and by showing them the hotel check in receipt "We was going back to" of we went to the pub.

Next morning it was the drive back down to London so we set off about 10, it was Me Mark, Ad, Sam, Toryn and Og the rest of the band made there own way back down, but coming home it was a real good laugh with Og singing all the way through Scotland "Grandad touched me and made me cry, I said grandad thats not fair" over and over again and better not mention what happened at the service station....

We got back to London about 5ish then I drove on home, the next night was Hoxton which I didnt go to as I had some work to catch up on, but from what I have heard it was a great night and really busy.

Thursday night was Birmingham at the Hound and Hares which was a great venue and I think the band sounded the best they did all tour. After went back and stayed at Adam's, we had a good chat in the morning and I feel really lucky to have Adam to chat to about advice with music and where I want to go to things, last night was Tunbridge Wells and it was a great turn out of people and sold quite a few copies of the new album, but we managed to get pulled over twice on the way home by Police which never helps a situation.

Also never sit in the back of a car with Sam Ficek.... His wondering hands go everywhere.

So think thats it really I know I have missed loads out but its been a great tour and the band have been fun to be with, and also Lee the booking agent has done a great job and made my part in this tour a lot easier.

Roses Kings Castles Tour Part 1

Thought id give everyone a quick update as the maid in the hotel kindly decided she would walk in at 8.30 this morning and woke me up then starts hoovering next door.
So where to begin, left London on Friday morning got a really nice splitter with tv, xbox and other things and drove up to Stockton on Tees to a venue called the KU Bar, the drive was going ok until i had a go, its only me which can take us off a motorway to a huge residential estate but once the sat nav had sorted itself out it was ok.
Think now is a good time to tell you who is with us, we have a full band, Adam and Tayo who if you have meet him before you will know what this could mean but he is a diamond and great fun to have on tour.
So yeah we got to Stockton about 19.30 and did our soundcheck and then got some food, we had abit of time to kill as we wasnt on till 11.30, but after bottle of gin, 2 creates of drink and 12 bottles of wine we was good to go. Then we had to check in to the hotel which sounds an easy task.... We stayed a premier inn and we was all paying for rooms and Og's (tayo) room was £10 more than everyone else as it was booked at a different time, so the receptionist was explaining this to him and he goes "Right thats it im going to get my cousin on the phone, im not paying this" and she said "who is that" then he comes out with the best answer ever "Lenny Henry hahahahahahahaha (Og Laugh) at that point i thought he was going to be homeless for the night but all was ok.
Oh yeah forgot the most horrific thing ive seen in a while, we was at a service station next to a motorway and a big husky dog ran across the motorway from nowhere and got ran over it was horrible and you want to go and get it but it was to late, but horrible thing to see, thought id share that story with you.
So gig went well went back to the hotel to sleep and the rest followed shortly, I was woke up about 2hrs later by Og and Adam laughing in the room next to me and Og shouting this went on for a bit but i fell back to sleep, only to find out security had to come to Og and Adam twice in the night due to the noise and complaints and i think his famous cousin came in to play again and Adam decided it was a good idea to start tweeting that Og had been arrested (Thanks for all your kind words for him tho)

Next day on the road again about a 3hr drive to Glasgow, Og was quite proud that he had left nothing behind in the hotel room, 10 minutes later phone call from premier inn, "Mr Baker who was in the room 42" "Tayo Ogidan" "Seems like he has left in a hurry and left alot of things behind, Shirts, chargers, toiletry's" so i pass the phone over to "Can you arrange next day delivery on these things"

So got to Glasgow its sooooo cold up here there like superhuman, did the soundcheck, Adam and the band went to do an instore while i did an interview about young people and music and my experiences which ill post in a few weeks or so the had a meal and then the gig which went great. Its really great to come back after last year, so many friendly faces which we all havent seen for a while, So that takes me up to about now sitting in a hotel room waiting to go to Edinburgh and the maid has just walked in again...... Anyway post again in a day or so, make sure you get Adam's new album which is available now

Yeah I know the fonts don't match!

Wow its been over a month since I last updated this blog, and yet im still not sure what to write.... Spent a week in Lanzarote with a few friends which was good, plus it was really hot which is a bonus. Work wise just been helping Adam Ficek (Roses Kings Castles) with his tour preparations, going to be tour managing the UK part of it so just making sure the hotels are sorted as are sound check times and so on, it should be a really good tour so if you can make it to any of the dates please do, there all going to be full band and its great to see how things are developing for Adam as he put so much effort in to everything he does. His new album is going to be out at the start of next month so ill put a pre-order link at the bottom. If I get chance when on tour ill do a little tour blog on here so if you interested you can keep up to date with the tour.

7 Nov 2010 Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh

8 Nov 2010 Stereo, York
9 Nov 2010 Hoxton BAR & GRILL, London

11 Nov 2010 Hare and Hounds, Birmingham
12 Nov 2010 The Forum, Tonbridge Wells
13 Nov 2010 The Cavern, Exeter

Ok what else has happened in the world of Rob.... Done a couple of my own nights which has both been great, did the last a couple of nights ago with a friend of mine Alan Wass coming down to headline, if any of you hasn't heard any of his music check out a track called "Hired Gun" on his myspace, such a great tune.

Is it just me or is Xfactor a lot worse than normal this year, normally you can watch it and say yeah he/she is ok but this year there all really awful. As much as I hate it its quite entertaining but I wish they would do an original music one with people who can play instruments or have a band, then maybe they may have a better chance of a future, because to be fair this year there just a bunch of people who could just about qualify as backing singers, they haven't got anything else from what we have already seen which can further there career and its a shame they get put in front of millions of people every week when there are 100's of talented unsigned bands out there who could really do with the exposure, anyway rant over and dont get me started on Fearne Cotton, fuck she does my head in (not xfactor related but worth a mention)

So other than tour preparations just starting to set up for my next night which is going to be a xmas special, Ive got a great band from London headlining called Bleech and 4 other bands that mean alot to me so quite excited about that one.
Been thinking quite abit about moving to London as I spend so much time there it makes sense so maybe after this tour get my CV up together and start mailing it out to some labels and see what help and advice they can give me, doing everything of your own back is great but London doesn't come cheap! But if there is anyone who is reading this who wants to give me a job drop me a message.

So think thats all but if you want a new band to listen to check out "Doll and the Kicks" there brilliant, think next year will be there year.

Hey Scenesters, Hey Hey Scenesters

Morning all, ummmm last few weeks never really know where to start these posts, maybe Reading Festival will be a good place, what a horrible place that is, walked in and was going past the tents, and they was there in huge puddles of water and then the bins where over-flowing in to those puddles and I was thinking fuck this, and the smell think there could have been bodies in that puddle. So if you went and camped in a puddles for 3-4 days well done your all hero's in my eyes.

So the festival I only went for the Saturday thank god, and yeah the music was great. Managed to catch I blame coco, who looked like she was having a great time to a packed tent, by this time I had only been there about 40 mins and had lost everyone already, so I wondered back over to watch one of my favourite band on the main stage, The Maccabees I love these guys, they still have quite a unique sound and are always amazing live.
Then I watched the Cribs, it was the first time I seen these guys live and they where great, brilliant to see Johnny Marr on stage he is abit of a hero of mine.

But now I feel its time for some life saving tips when at Reading... Wear a top with a hood as you are going to get covered in piss, its not fun feeling a liquid fall on your head, then trying to work out if its warm or not? Then its the old run your finger through your hair and smell trick, this is only for the brave sometimes its better not to know.
Now when watching the Cribs it was took to a different level, the was alot of bark chippings on the floor due to the rain, so these bark chips had been down for a few days they had been stood on, pissed on and so on, and some little prick thought yeah lets start throwing them up in the air to and then it was the old saying if you cant beat them join them and everyone did and I was thinking you fucking animals, at the point a hood wasn't enough (plus hoods fuck up your hair, but saying that so does piss and bark chippings) and another tip if the person in front of you get on to the friends shoulders, move as they are now a target!
Ok then after the Cribs watched abit of Dizzy who was pretty good with the crowd and then on to The Libertines. I managed to find a couple of friends at this point so I really happy I could watch this performance which these guys, but yeah not going to go on about it to much as Im sure if your interested you have seen the video's and have your own opinion of the show which will make mine pointless :) but if you haven't they where great!

So cant really remember much more about the last month been alot of trips to London, been quite busy trying to sort some nights out, The Swindon nights are now fully booked till the end of the year, this months night is on the 24th and a band called Spitfire from London will be coming to play, there still quite a new band but have a great sound so looking forward to that and there is also some great local bands playing.

Oxford has been put on the back burner for a while as trying to get Vienna up and running, its abit tricky to know what I can say at the moment as I know who I want for the first night and its looking good but till its confirmed don't want to temp fate, but the background work is looking good and Ive gained another venue I can use so that is great news, and the guy who is helping me out there, I owe him alot for all his help (he knows who he is).

Went up to Brixton Jamm last night as Peter was playing and it was a great night, he did two shows in one night, and congratulations to everyone who was involved as it ran really smoothly. The first show Peter was supported by Alan Wass who I'm a big fan of and is playing a night for me in October and he done me a huge favour last night so a big thank you to him. So then Peter done his set and I don't think I've been in a venue for a long time which was as hot as last night but never the less it was a great set, after abit of fresh air it was back inside to watch the support act for the second show, it was a band called Krakatoa which I have mentioned before a few months ago, but I went to watch them play at Proud in Camden last week and I think (get ready for a big statement) they maybe the best unsigned band I've watched all year, and last night I just stood at the back and watched as you can tell so much about how good a band is from watching the crowd and I always look at this when I'm watching a new band, as if the can hold a crowd and get people dancing and singing along without them leaving there defiantly doing something right, when they first came on the venue may have been only a quarter full but by the end it was three-quarters full, so it was a great success for them, there next gig is at Dirty South on the 17th Sep so go along if you can!
After that abit more fresh air was needed and I caught up with Jerome from the Skuzzies, it was great to have a good catch up with him it had been a while and we put the world to rights, and the conclusion we came to in our 2hr conversation was a trip to Switzerland was needed!
I went to the show with a couple of friends from Switzerland and it was the first time they had seen Peter outside of a festival so they was lucky enough to see him twice last night, hope they enjoyed the delights a London show can bring.
Also managed to catch up with Marcus from the band The Thirst who is a great guy and they have a gig at Plan B in Brixton on 23rd Sept so check them out if your around.
Sooooo think thats it until next time.

The Libertines Live Rehearsal - HMV Forum,London

In the words of Peter "And here we are again", The venue was beautifully fitting, a 1934 art deco theatre and with the crowd all seated staring at the the iconic image of the "Up the bracket" album cover waiting in anticipation, a spokes man takes to the stage and thanks everyone for coming and to inform the audience that they will take to the stage in 10 minutes.... 20 minutes later a roar from the crowd as Peter,Carl, John and Gary take to the stage in front of a live crowd for the first time in 6 years.
With Peter to the left, Carl centre and John to the right they went straight in to "Horrowshow" the first song they looked uneasy some sideways glances from Peter to Carl as if to say "Do I come over to you, or are you coming to me" but they each stayed behind there own mic as if it was there own safety zone, John was doing what John does and picks a point in the distance and doesn't take his eyes of it but yet still manages to hit every chord.
They then burst in to "Delaney" and it wasn't till the following song "Vertigo" that Peter wandered over to Carl and started to play off each other like they did 6 years ago, with whispers and smiles to each other Peter lit a cigarette, and you knew it was just about to get started.
They went on to play 'Last Post On The Bugle', 'Begging', 'The Ha Ha Wall' and 'Lust Of The Libertine' with some of the lyrics still ringing true today, watching them on stage it was like everything in the past had ever happened, they all looked so happy to be in each other's company and by now even John was waving to people in the crowd and Peter and Carl was both putting there hands into the crowd (they will be very brave to do that tonight) and then saying hello to people. It was an amazing atmosphere it felt like more of a homecoming sing-along celebration for a group of people that had gone missing than a gig.
Peter now having enough cigarettes from the 300 strong crowd to become a tobacconist started to chat to Carl and he joined him for a quick cig.
They went on to play some of the classics from the two albums including 'Campaign Of Hate' 'Boys In The Band' 'Tell The King' 'Death On The Stairs' 'Music When The Lights Go Out'.
As each song went by the pace they was playing at was picking up and with the traditional mic sharing and finishing each others lyrics, it was all in full flow.
Carl then put his guitar down as Peter started to play the opening riff to 'What Katie Did' and took to the mic, with Peter and the crowd joining in for "Shoop shoop, shoop de-lang-a-lang".
Carl picked up his guitar again and then went to straight into 'The Saga', It was then the track that every Libertines and non Libertines fan knows and it was always going to be an interesting one to watch them sing/play first time around again, with them both behind there own mics they started to play 'Cant Stand Me Now" a song that as all of you know is a very honest and raw song, with both of them looking to in the crowd they started to sing the lyrics, Peter then turned to Carl and sang the final section of the song but Carl looked on into the crowd.
It was one of the best song of the night to watch, and then without any afterthought and no more than a 10 second break when straight into 'What Became Of The Likely Lads' 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' Where they shared the same mic all the way through and played at blistering pace and on to the, 'The Good Old Days' and 'Time For Heroes'.
They then lit another cigarette and had a laugh and a few jokes, Peter reminded the crowd "It's only a rehearsal and you got in for free anyway".
They played the opening to 'Radio America' before somehow but seamlessly blending it in to the classic that is 'Up The Bracket', after that they all waved goodbye to the crowd and Gary thanked everyone for coming along.
After about 10 minutes with the guitars re-tuned they returned to the stage with drinks in there hand, Peter and Carl done there arm in arm drink sharing routine and then just went for it, it was the first time that I had been lucky enough to watch them play live and after hearing all the live recordings and seeing the video's on Youtube you get a good idea of how good they were live, but the next two tracks didn't even come close to what I had seen before, they played them so fast and was bouncing off each other it was an amazing sight. For all the people what have said "It wont be the same as before" they was right, its was better than anything that I had ever seen before and had expected from them, and I think anyone who was there and saw them play 'What A Waster' and 'I Get Along' would agree with me.
So after a set which went on for just under an hour and a half, and consisted of 23 songs, it was an amazing gig, and it was great to watch and sing-along to, the passion was still there for all of them and for everyone to see, and I think towards the end of the set they was just starting to relax and get use to all being on stage together again, so if last night was anything to go on the next 3 shows are going to be very special. Maybe the Albion has just left the port again, who knows where the next stop will be?

Saturday, 14 August 2010

Not to sure where to begin after my last blog, been really busy doing the groundwork on a few new Asylum nights one in Oxford, as its not to far from where I live and it has a uni so there will plenty of students to promote to, but as normal Facebook doesn't seem to like people who are using a friend profile to promote but nevermind there's always a way around these things, there going to be held at a venue called the Cellar so hope the first night is going to be later in the year.

The other night I'm launching which I'm really excited about is one in Vienna in Austria, I was lucky enough to travel there a few months ago with Adam Ficek when he was doing a Roses Kings Castles tour and the people out there are amazing and I've made some great friends out there, they really seem to appreciate live music, so the plan is to take a UK band/artist out there to headline and use bands from Vienna as support and in return if they want a show in London i will help them as much as I can.
I've got a great venue to use it's an old world war bomb shelter called "the shelter", I would love to do a night every 6-8 weeks, but again its not going to be ready to launch until later in the year, just need to sort a mailing list out and then a bit of press in Vienna.

Soooooo the next coming week or so, currently working on booking a few tours, trying to arrange a French, Spanish and also a full Austrian tour, Austria will be easy and Spain won't to be to hard but struggling at the moment with France, but just found a new agent out there so hoping it will be ok, but if your reading this in France give me a shout.
Will also be booking a mini tour of Ireland for Anto Dust and a date or two for a band i love called Kicaberry in Amsterdam, been spending quite abit of time with these guys in the last few weeks and there brilliant to be around make sure you check out there Myspace.

Not sure if im aloud to promote this but fuck it sure it will be ok, a dear friend of mine Jerome Alexander's band The Skuzzies are doing a very special gig this Thursday (19th) at the Pipeline on Liverpool Street, it's being filmed for an ITV program so it should be a great night, I've been working with Jerome for maybe a year or so now and he's became a good friend so I'm really happy things are going well for them and looking forward to hearing the new album, but its going to be a great night so if your in the area come along doors are at 8.30.

Oh yeah also working on a verrrrrry special one off gig in New York, but thats all i can say at the moment but if it comes off it going to be the biggest gig ive ever put on, but like everything it takes abit of time to arrange so hoping thats going to be something for early 2011!

Not to sure what to write about now, cant stop listening to The Beatles track "A day in the life" hate to say it but The Beatles has never really done anything for me but love this track. Oh yeah has anyone watch Inception, what the fuck is that all about? How do you ever write a film like that you must even have a great imagination or have took alot of drugs, but its a great film so watch it if you haven't already.

So, down the hatch, up the bracket and all along the watch tower!

Busy Week...

Ok sooooo last week and a bit, its been pretty good, quite a few nights and flights of fancy, went to Carl's Barat's gig a the 100 club in London for the charity "Little Episodes" it was a great night he played a set with a mix of DPT, Libs and some of his new solo work, looking forward to the new album, It was also great to have a chat to him before the gig as id never met him before.
So after the gig me and a few friends embarked on a wander into Soho, its a great place at night always full of some "interesting" characters after being kicked out of 2 bars in less than an hour we walked to Piccadilly Circus and stared at the bright lights for a bit and caught up with a few friends so it was a good night.

A few days later I did one of my "Asylum Sessions" nights in my home town I had London singer/songwriter Anto Dust and also folk duo Lucky Clover come to play and they where amazing, I started off booking a couple of shows in London for Anto last year and she is writing some amazing songs, she preformed one of her new ones and its just one of those songs that you just listen to and get drew into it and by the end of it your sitting there and thinking fuck that was brilliant, I've asked her to record it and post it on her myspace so hopefully she does, and also check out Lucky Clover they have a great sound and were lovely people.

The week was spent booking up gigs for various bands as well and trying to sort out some nights for myself, as much as I love doing nights in my hometown I think they could be coming to an end, its far to hit and miss, problem is there isnt a uni so nothing seems to change and your audience is only ever going to be so big, but it does mean alot to me as I do know so many people around here and there's been some amazing nights, but name one thing that lasts forever?

Ok Friday night was another one of my nights this time it was headlined by London band Krakatoa, I listened to there myspace before i arranged the night and I liked what I heard, but when they came to play they was something else, it was just the way I like my music, played really fast and loud there is a track of there's called "Esprit De Corps" its brilliant it keeps building up and gets faster and faster then peaks then goes again, check it out, it sounds even better live and Darien the lead singer has a great stage presents. Anyway they was a great bunch of lads and i can see them going on to big things, make sure you go and watch them if there playing near you and your see what I mean.

So after a few hours sleep on up to London to the Queen of Hoxton for "No time for heros" night where they had Coco Sumner preforming and it was good to see her again, I watched first at a small show maybe 2 years ago now, i think it was at Jazz after dark in Soho, and she did a show with Peter Doherty and she was brilliant, and then I seen her again at the St Mortiz club.
I was a huge fan of her older work, tracks like "Bohemian Love" "No Smile" and "Never be" where great and its a shame that she don't preform them anymore, would have been good just leave one or two of them on her myspace to see what people thought of them because they was beautiful songs but things has changed and maybe she wanted to launch a new sound when she got signed? But for a show in which I had only heard a couple of the songs before I thought she was great and cant wait for the album.

So yeah that was my week, this week is just about sorting some a new night out in a different area all together, so keep you all posted on that one and listening to all the rumours that's building up for a certain gig at the end of the month.......
